The Young Writers Program is a program of the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.

The Program is looking to hire two positions for the fall of 2018.

Volunteer Coordinator:

The Volunteer Coordinator works to recruit and maintain volunteer positions. Working closely with the Executive Director and Word Lab Director, the Volunteer Coordinator places volunteers within all of the program’s projects, ensuring that volunteers understand the parameters of their position, and addressing any issues or complaints that may arise. The Volunteer Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining program data from student surveys along with data gathered from Writing Project Assistants.

Volunteer Coordinator

Employer: Volunteer Center
FTE: 1.0 Sept. 1, 2018 – July 30, 2019
Pay scale: monthly stipend determined by Volunteer Center as part of the Americorps Program

Job Description:
The Volunteer Coordinator works to recruit and maintain volunteer positions. Working closely with the Executive Director and Word Lab Director, the Volunteer Coordinator places volunteers within all of the program’s projects, ensuring that volunteers understand the parameters of their position, and addressing any issues or complaints that may arise. The Volunteer Coordinator is also responsible for collecting data from student surveys along with data gathered from Writing Project Assistants.

Job Duties:
• Recruit and establish specific volunteers for projects including establishing
relationship with Ed Departments at UCSC, Cabrillo, and CSUMB.
• Support volunteers during projects, attend first and last day
• Photograph volunteers with educators and students
• Act as liaison between teacher and volunteers
• Act as Writing Project Assistant in classroom when necessary
• Track volunteer database and volunteer sign-ups for individual projects
• Monitor online registration and volunteer hours
• Monitor volunteer fingerprint and TB test requirements
• Publicize volunteer opportunities (on website)
• Develop and execute volunteer gatherings
• Coordinate volunteer day-of-training setup and breakdown
• Develop, gather and record training evaluation data
• Publicize and prep for volunteer trainings
• Distribute surveys pre and post
• Gather and record survey data
• Post weekly to social media (FB) incl. posts on affiliated events and orgs
 and volunteer highlights/appreciation
• Create quarterly newsletter for Mail Chimp
• Coordinate volunteer appreciation luncheon

Word Lab Director:

The Word Lab Director will act as the lead teacher to Word Lab students, following and/or creating developmentally appropriate writing curriculum for students from ages 12-15, three days a week from 3-5 p.m. The Word Lab Director is responsible for the maintenance and operation of The Word Lab as well as the maintenance of The Chamber of Heart and Mystery, both currently at the Museum of Art & History in downtown Santa Cruz.

Word Lab Director

Employer: Santa Cruz County Office of Education
FTE: .75 Sept. 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019
Pay scale: $35,000 per year

Job Description: The Word Lab Director will act as the lead teacher to Word Lab students, following and/or creating developmentally appropriate writing curriculum for students from ages 12-15. The Word Lab Director is responsible for the maintenance and operation of The Word Lab as well as the maintenance of The Chamber of Heart and Mystery, both currently at the Museum of Art & History in downtown Santa Cruz.

Job Duties:
• Develop lesson plans for students ages 9-15.
• Teach lesson plans during Word Lab hours with assistance/collaboration of volunteer Writing Project Assistants.
• Ensure safety and whereabouts of students at all times.
• Check-in and Check-out students at The Word Lab.
• Coordinate transportation of students to and from Word Lab when necessary.
• Act as liaison for schools, principals, and teachers.
• Complete weekly reports for the MAH: What’s working, what’s not, # of students, etc.
• Return The Word Lab to prior configuration each day.
• Ensure every student is picked up each day.
• Participate in small group settings with students when needed.
• Maintain The Word Lab and Chamber.
• Be point person for Young Writers Program in coordinating with MAH’s Event and Operations Catalyst.
• Communicate with MAH Event and Operations Catalyst re: supply of Chamber store.
• Procure and provide snacks for students.
• Ensure all student writing and icons are delivered to Publication Coordinator.
• Coordinate with MAH staff and YWP ED on larger Chamber maintenance issues.
• Make presentations to student classrooms as needed.
• Engage in fundraising efforts when appropriate.
• Organize walking bus from schools to Word Lab when appropriate.
• Work with Volunteer Coordinator on volunteer recruitment and placement.

Job Requirements:
• BA in English or related field
• Experience working with people age 9-15
• Spanish language skills desired but not mandatory
• Strong writing skills
• Attention to detail
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work without supervision
• Self-starter
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Knowledge of MS Word and Excel
